Complex Numbers

The rules you must have ready for the exam.

How to use this: say each rule in your head, then tap Show me to check.

The basics

2 rules
Rule 01

i and i²

i = √−1, so i² = −1. A complex number is z = x + yi: x real part, y imaginary part.

Rule 02

Add & subtract

Add real to real and imaginary to imaginary.

Multiply & conjugate

2 rules
Rule 03

Multiply

Multiply out like brackets, then replace every i² with −1 and tidy.

Rule 04

Conjugate

The conjugate of x + yi is x − yi. z times its conjugate is always real.

Division & Argand

2 rules
Rule 05

Divide

Multiply top and bottom by the conjugate of the denominator; the bottom becomes real.

Rule 06

Argand diagram

Plot z = x + yi as (x, y): real axis across, imaginary axis up.

Modulus & equality

2 rules
Rule 07

Modulus

|z| = √(x² + y²), the distance from the origin.

Rule 08

Equality

Two complex numbers are equal when real = real and imaginary = imaginary — often gives simultaneous equations.

Quadratics

1 rule
Rule 09

Complex roots

If a quadratic has complex roots they come in conjugate pairs: x + yi and x − yi. To prove a root, sub it in and show you get 0.
